Wasn't General Conference simply amazing?
I am so uplifted and encouraged by the messages I heard and the direct counsel and instructions I received. And isn't it incredible how we can each receive personalized information, instruction meant just for us individually, during the same meeting?
It's powerful.
One of the impressions I received was a new excitement for the Come Follow Me curriculum. I cannot wait to study the Book of Mormon this way next year, and in the meantime, I'm feeling a renewed energy and commitment to studying the New Testament.
Our family has learned so much through these simple discussions, things I hope our children will remember. A couple of nights ago while trying to keep our little ones' attention, we had them imagine putting on the Whole Armor of God, piece by piece. As we read the verses Elijah (5) held up his pretend shield of faith and we talked about how his faith will protect him from all the fiery darts of the adversary.
My husband made silly sound effects, like arrows were bouncing off the shield, "kwa-ping!" and we all giggled. This spontaneous addition to our lesson was brought about because he was restless and not paying attention, but I hope it's a detail he remembers as he grows up.

It was a good reminder for me that this study is designed to be simple. We don't need to spend hours create an entire working replica of the armor of God out of cardboard to reach our children's hearts.
Simply listening to the Spirit in the moment brought that idea to mind and allowed us to have a more meaningful discussion than was originally planned.
But the thing that made it so we were there, ready to talk and discuss the scriptures in the first place is because we made a simple plan.

Here's our plan for this week:
Monday: Read Come Follow Me introduction + Philippians 4:4 and do the Frowny Face Challenge
Tuesday: Read Philippians 2:14-15 and discuss how we can be a Light to others
Wednesday: Read Philippains 3:5-14 and watch Sacrifice and Service
Thursday: Read Philippians 4:1-13
Friday: Read Colossians 1:9-11 and 2:2-3 and discuss what we can do to increase in the knowledge of God.
Saturday: Read Colossians 1:23; 2:7
Sunday: Weekly recap and catch-up (if we missed any of the things planned above, which we probably did); kids lead discussion.

How to use Scripture Sketchnotes:
TRACE. You can also trace these into your scriptures or journal using a light box or a sunny window. My husband made me an awesome lightbox, but this one is a great option for you to purchase.
COLORING PAGE. Use as a coloring page for your kids to work on during family scripture time. Write additional notes and insights on the pages as you go. You could add all the completed sketchnotes pages to a binder to keep as a reminder of the gospel topics you've discussed together.
STICKER PAPER. Print on clear sticker paper and cut apart the doodles to add to your scripture journal or into the margins of your scriptures. (This year, I am using this free wide-margin New Testament PDF that I had printed and spiral bound at a local copy shop. But there are many wide-margin options available.)

Printing on clear sticker paper allows you to add color to the doodles using colored pencils, but still be able to see the words beneath them. I have tried out a few different kinds of colored pencils on this sticker paper. Ergosoft pencils and Prismacolor pencils work really well.
